Swine flu cases spread in Asia, Americas

GENEVA (AFP) - Mexico's swine flu death toll rose by four as the virus continued to spread through Latin America and made inroads in Asia, with the number of Japanese infections topping 200

A visitor disinfects their hands at an entrance of a hospital in Osaka. About 30 vaccine makers from 19 industrialised and developing countries were invited by the WHO to Tuesday's discussions, which officials said focused on the cost of the vaccine and its availability in vulnerable poor countries

In the United States, a man who recently travelled to Mexico may have become the country's 8th swine flu casualty when he died Tuesday after contracting the A(H1N1) virus, according to health officials and local media reports.
The number of people to have died of the virus in Mexico hit 74 while confirmed infections in the country, the epicentre of the outbreak, rose by almost 100 in 24 hours to 3,660, health authorities said.
United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon urged people to remain vigilant against swine flu because previous pandemics had shown flu outbreaks could start mild and worsen.
"That is why the world must remain vigilant and alert to the warning signs," Ban said as he addressed the World Health Organisation's annual assembly in Geneva.
The outbreak spread to a third western prefecture in Japan and experts warned it may also have reached Tokyo, which with almost 36 million people is the world's most populous urban area.
Face masks have become ubiquitous on buses, commuter trains and in shopping centres of affected areas in Japan where 238 people have ben infected.
Many of the cases have been among school students, prompting authorities to close more than 4,400 schools, colleges and kindergartens for the rest of the week to slow the spread of the virus.
Elsewhere in Asia, Taiwan announced its first confirmed case, an Australian male who had arrived by plane from Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, Australia itself reported two new cases, including a boy aged nine, raising its overall number of confirmed infections to three.
The boy had returned to Melbourne city with his family on a flight from Los Angeles on May 12, and began showing flu-like symptoms this week, Victoria state health officials said.
In Japan, the western commercial hub of Kobe remained the worst affected, announcing more than 20 new infections of the (A)H1N1 virus among roughly three dozen new cases confirmed in the country Wednesday morning.
The western prefecture of Shiga became the third locality to confirm an infection, with a man in his 20s, who returned from a weekend trip to Kobe, testing positive for the virus.
Japan's first domestic cases of the virus were confirmed last weekend in Kobe and Osaka, where they spread quickly in and between two high schools that had met for a volleyball tournament.
The UN health agency said Tuesday that cases across the world had soared by more than 1,000 since the previous day with 9,830 infections now reported in 40 countries, including 79 deaths.
The Mexican health minister did, however, note that officials believe the A(H1N1) virus there is on the wane. Still, 12 confirmed cases in Colombia and another 10 in Chile suggested the virus was spreading across Latin America.
A 14-month-old Canadian child who arrived in Cuba from Toronto became the fourth case of swine flu on the island.
The WHO has so far resisted pressure to declare a full-fledged swine flu pandemic, but anxiety about the spread of the virus -- especially in Asia and the Americas -- is growing.
Ban has been in talks with the leaders of some of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies on the development of a vaccine.
About 30 vaccine makers from 19 industrialised and developing countries were invited by the WHO to Tuesday's discussions, which officials said focused on the cost of the vaccine and its availability in vulnerable poor countries.
Ban told the WHO's assembly afterwards that partnerships with the private sector would be "absolutely vital".
"Solidarity in the face of this particular outbreak must mean that all have access to drugs and vaccines," he told the group's 193 member states. "It means that virus samples and data are shared."
The WHO has been weighing the risks of halting production of the seasonal flu virus to free up production capacity for a swine flu vaccine.

Even before Charice hit the final note, the audience were already in standing ovation.
Oprah could only utter “wow” while Diane Warren described Charice’s performance as “amazing” and “beautiful.”
David Foster, on the other hand, said: “In my world, this only happens two to three times probably in my lifetime. And I work with a lot of people. So, this is one of those two to three moments… she just sings so beautifully.”

American Idol: Adam Lambert sings One, Cryin

As expected, Adam Lambert’s performance was over the top on Tuesday’s American Idol (May 12). First, he sang U2’s One for his judge’s choice, picked by Simon. Bono told him it would be their pleasure for Adam to sing the song when Simon called to get permission.
It was just Adam under a blue light with a piano. I thought he over-sang it. He screamed and shrieked and mugged for the cameras—which just wasn’t needed. I like Adam but he seemed off-key!
Randy: “I lost the song when you went off melody.”
Kara: “You make it unbelievable. You did your own version.”
Paula: “It was one brilliant song and one superb performance.”
Simon: “Kidding around, this is the point I was trying to make: It was a brilliant, brilliant performance.”

Entertainment Weekly names Adam Lambert the most exciting ‘Idol’ contestant in years

The magazine has named Adam the most exciting “American Idol” contestant in years—and not just because he might be gay.
Inside, the article reads:
“With his mop of glam-rock cobalt-blue-on-dyed-black hair, his hearing, his sneering, and his unambiguously ambiguous sexuality, Adam would have probably been brushed off early on. And there was also a time, more recently, when Adam would have made it to Hollywood but been dismissed as ‘too Broadway’ or ‘too musical theater.’”
While the 27-year-old singer is widely assumed to be gay, he simply told the publication: “I know who I am. I’m an honest guy, and I’m just going to keep singing.”
“Now the question is whether an openly gay contestant can win American Idol? The question is being considered everywhere from fan blogs to The New York Times – but we’re still one openly gay contestant short of a test case. Adam’s sexuality offers a fascinating challenge to the show’s status quo. Is Idol ready for a gay winner? Possibly. After all, its British forebear Pop Idol crowned a contestant, Will Young, who came out shortly after he won. And Idol itself came close when Clay Aiken, then closeted but somebody who even house plants surmised was gay, finished second. But is Idol ready for this gay(ish) winner? Perhaps not. Clay, after all, never sang “I’m gonna give you every inch of my love” while wearing skintight pants and green glitter guyliner.”

First and foremost, did you like Martin Nievera’s fresh new version of the Philippine National Anthem? The traditionalists say the song is “untouchable.” The liberals say it was very artistic and was not in any way disrespectful of our national dignity. How about you, did you like it? Did it make you feel less nationalistic or patriotic?

Connie Culp: First US face transplant recipient revealed

Connie Culp, the United States’ first-ever face transplant patient, appeared in public for the first time today and thanked the doctors who performed her surgery after a devastating 2004 shooting incident left her disfigured.
Culp, 46, lost most of the midsection of her face. She was left without a nose, a palate or lower eyelids and could not breathe on her own or eat solid food following the incident
Five months ago, she received a new face from a dead woman and underwent a procedure that lasted 22 hours at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Surgeons replaced about 80% of her face.
“Well, I guess I’m the one you came to see today,” Culp said at a press conference at the Cleveland Clinic. “While I know you all want to focus on me, I think it’s more important you focus on the donor family that made it so I could have this Christmas present, I guess I should say.”
Culp’s husband, Thomas, shot her in 2004, then turned the gun on himself. He went to prison for seven years. His wife was left clinging to life. Hundreds of fragments of shotgun pellet and bone splinters were embedded in her face.
